Dear Band Families,
Thank you for joining us tonight for our Summer Band Concert! This evening is one of my favorites on the calendar. Tonight is a chance to celebrate everything these remarkable students have built together over the course of a year - all 13,770 minutes together - and that doesn't include any jazz band or marching band time...!
What a year it has been. Tonight you'll hear a program that reflects the full range of what our students have grown into: more confidence, more nuance, more musical risk-taking, and more heart than ever. From our fall concert to tonight, the growth has been extraordinary. This part of this job never gets old.
Over the course of this year, I've watched students rise to meet challenge after challenge. I've seen the teamwork and dedication that marching band demands, the ambition of students pursuing honor bands and advanced opportunities beyond our campus, the courage it takes to improvise in front of an audience, and the immense discipline that chamber music requires. Every one of those experiences lives in the music you'll hear tonight.
And of course, June brings with it the bittersweet part. This year's graduating seniors have meant the world to this program - and to me, too! They've led by example, lifted those around them, and left this band better than they found it. I am so proud of each of them, and I know I'm not alone when I say, "we are really going to miss you!"
Tonight is a celebration of music, but more than that, it's a celebration of community. These students had choices. They chose music. They chose each other, and that means everything to me and the younger students.
Tonight, let's send our seniors off right - with the appreciation, excitement, and love they have absolutely earned.
At the end of the concert, please take a moment to fill out our Concert Props Google Form! It'll only take you a moment, and it's so appreciated!
With gratitude,
Chris Thomas
Director of BandsBainbridge High SchoolBeautiful Bainbridge Island | Land Acknowledgement
We would like to begin by acknowleding that the land on which we gather is within the ancestral territory of the Suquamish people. Expert fisher peoples, canoe builders, basket weavers, and much more, they have lived in harmony with the lands and waterways along Washington's Central Salish Sea for thousands of years, as they promised in the Point Elliot Treaty of 1855.
"Every part of this soil is sacred in the estimation of my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove has been hallowed by some sad or happy event in days long vanished."
- Chief Sealth, 1854

We have a long history of chamber music at BHS. In fact, since 2022, BHS chamber musicians have earned 25 medals and 10 gold medals at our WMEA/WIAA State Chamber Music Contest, which includes all 400+ WIAA high schools. Both medal counts are tops in the state. ("We're #1!") It's not all about winning, but it is about being interested, informed, planning ahead, and working hard.
At the regional level (since 2018) BHS Band Members have received an incredible 247 superior ratings, the highest rating possibe. Students continued that this year. You can read more about this year's regional OMEA Solo & Ensemble competition here. If you, or your student, are heading to State in April, you can view lot of helpful information here.

We had a great year in our jazz program. For the first time ever, we hired an *official* assistant coach for our second jazz band. This is a huge development for us, and as a result our second jazz band had it's best year since before covid, when Jazz Two was pushing 30 members! Thank you to all the BISD administrators that signed off on this!
Our events and festivals were fun this year, and I am looking forward to them all next year. Marina Albero was sublime and also so exciting as our Puget Sounds Jazz Festival Headliner. We are hoping to sell out next year's seats - the event is well worth the price of admission. Next year's headliner will be announced later this summer.
I am so proud to report that our students had another amazing marching band season! With 51 members this year, our band took home several awards.

Composer Diversity Statement
I acknowledge the composer pool for this concert isn't as diverse as I would like it to be. While each of these composers has a unique and expressive voice of their own, it is a goal of mine to play a role in righting the 100+ years of privileges and systems that have largely failed to find, encourage, or publish the voices of women and people of color. Now, it is more important than ever to support our schools and booster programs, so we have the resources needed to invest in new curriculum from new composers

Chris Thomas has been the band director at Bainbridge High School since the 2012-2013 school year. Since then, every area of the program has won multiple awards for excellence.
Mr Thomas prides himself in being a well rounded musician who enjoys the time he gets to spend with his bandmates. As an educator, he works to show each of his students the joys of inspired performances and deep band friendships. He loves this program, and wants it to inspire generations of kind and ambitious young people from Bainbridge Island.
While at BHS, he founded our Community Swing Dance, State Honors Recital, and the Puget Sounds Jazz Festival, the only festival dedicated to improvization and the joyful, spontanious interactions between young jazz musicians. Mr Thomas has also served on multiple schedule and hiring committees while at BHS, and has served on the Board of Directors for our regional music teachers' association in multiple roles, including president, vice-president, and webmaster.
Off campus, he plays trumpet with Backstreet Jellyroll (an 11 piece professional Van Morrison cover band), TMB Brass Band (Seattle's first call for second line), the Kitsap Jazz Orchestra (an 18 piece, professional level big band), and Bud's Brass Quintet (a casual classical ensemble of mostly retired musicians and educators). He served as principal trumpet in the Bainbridge Symphony for five years before retiring from that ensemble in 2018, and previously performed with the Missoula Symphony. While finishing his Masters Degree, Chris was a featured soloist with the Missoula City Band during their televised July 4th performances. Mr Thomas played lead trumpet in the top jazz ensembles at Central Washington University and the University of Montana while earning his degrees. Chris was a lead trumpet and soloist with the Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps in 2001 and 2002, and with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in 2003 and 2004.
Before coming to BHS, Mr Thomas taught music classes for the Bellingham School District, Sedro-Woolley High School, the West Valley School District in Yakima, and The University of Montana. Mr Thomas also was on the instructional staff of The Seattle Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps from 2009 to 2012.
Mr Thomas holds a Masters Degree in Music from The University of Montana (2010), a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Central Washington University (2007, with endorsements in instrumental music, vocal music, and general music), and an Associates of Arts and Sciences Degree from Shoreline Community College. Chris was inspired to continue studying music as a potential career path while taking a few elective classes as a freshman at Whatcom Community College.
Mr Thomas is married to Dr. Lauren Drakopulos, and together, they are renovating their 1898 schoolhouse home and trying their best to explore the great NW and beyond whenever they have a rare spare minute. In August 2023, they welcomed their first child, Nora, to the world, and adopted a friend's 7 year old havanese-poodle mix, Gaia! Life is crazy all of a sudden...!
Mr T has a soft spot in his heart for the Seattle Mariners, frisbees in parks, rock climbing, guitars, and the bands at BHS. Go Spartans! <3 <3
Lillian Jackson is a senior at Bainbridge High School and is pursuing degrees in Music Education, French Horn performance, and Music Therapy. Lillian has served as BHS Drum Major for the past 3 years and Trombone 1 in BHS Jazz 1 collective winning awards such as outstanding soloist and Best Drum Major. Lillian has spent time student teaching at Woodward Middle School, Sakai Intermediate School, and Bainbridge High School through the Academic Coaching program. With Mr. Meehan's help she has led and conducted the 7th and 8th grade band with Disney's "Aladdin" in the 2025 WMS Pops concert. This year she student taught both 6th grade band and general music. With the support of Ms. Gibbs, Lillian taught and led classes in general music, learning how to teach choir! Mr. Thomas has guided her to teach and conduct High School Band, conducting Tonight's arrangement of "Moana" with our wonderful Symphonic Band. Lillian has numerous WMEA and OMEA musical accomplishments including winning 2nd in WA State on solo french horn, 3rd in WA State in large percussion ensemble, 7 honorable mentions, and 20 superior scores on the regional level. Lillian has earned over $200,000 in music scholarships from over 15 schools and is excited to take her next musical journey at the Jordan College of Arts at Butler University.
