Placements for Wind Ensemble & Symphonic Band happen in the spring. There is no audition for Percussion Ensemble, and no one "gets cut" from band. Everyone who wants a spot, gets a spot. Placements / auditions area to make sure each class and student is successful.
New students should contact the band director and schedule a placement appointment.
Please record one complete set of audition music for your instrument.
Players may choose between the following sets of audition materials:
Here's the direct link to this year's audition music (2025). WMEA has updated their materials several times recently, so please ping Mr Thomas if the link falls outdated. Here's the WMEA top link for honor bands.
You may record WIBC Set-A or WIBC Set-B for your audition. If you record Set-B, please be sure to record the SOLO tracks, and NOT the ENSEMBLE version of Danny Boy.
Standard Audition Criteria Apply
Our auditions are an important part in setting up each ensemble and every one of our students for a year of success. That being said, placements aren't based solely on these brief appointments. Students need to be reliable and professional throughout the year to maximize their audition placements. This is an industry standard that will help us have the best experience building a quality program together.
TONE is characteristic regardless of volume or range
TIME is steady & predictable
NOTATION is played accurately (notes, rhythms, articulations, & dynamics...)
NUANCE. Music has life and is played stylistically.
Play the hardest music you can play successfully. Here are some considerations:
All-State/NW tends to be the hardest material, and WIBC Set-B is the easiest.
It's better to play something easier well, than play something challenging poorly.
In a tie of quality, it's better to have played something more challening than easier.
