End of the Year Concert

Bainbridge High School TheaterMay 24th, 2023. 7pm.
Mr Meehan and I a few summers ago.

Dear Band Families and Friends,

Thank you so much for coming to our End of the Year Band Concert! Your support tonight and throughout the year has meant the world to the whole band. There's nothing like playing for an audience of loved ones - and that is YOU!!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this evening's concert. Tonight's show is the culmination of a year's worth of hard work by nearly a hundred students, and will feature each part of our symphonic program. I am so proud of the progress we've made this year, and I am excited to share the results of what all we've been working on!

Tonight's concert is also a celebration of our seniors, who are the backbone of our program. It takes some sacrofice to stay in band for four years through a 6 period semester schedule, and we so appreciate that our seniors have stuck with us until the end. Like all our graduates, we know this year's seniors will go off and accomplish so many great things in college and in life. I am excited to hear all about it!

Sincerely,

Chris Thomas

Director of Bands, Bainbridge High School

Beautiful Bainbridge Island | Land Acknowledgement

We would like to begin by acknowleding that the land on which we gather is within the ancestral territory of the Suquamish people. Expert fisher peoples, canoe builders, basket weavers, and much more, they have lived in harmony with the lands and waterways along Washington's Central Salish Sea for thousands of years, as they promised in the Point Elliot Treaty of 1855.

"Every part of this soil is sacred in the estimation of my people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and grove has been hallowed by some sad or happy event in days long vanished."

- Chief Sealth, 1854

Tonight's Conductors

Chris Thomas has been the band director at Bainbridge High School since the 2012-2013 school year. Since then, every area of the program has won multiple awards for excellence. He prides himself in being a well rounded musician who enjoys the time he spends with his bandmates, and as an educator, he works to show each of his students the joys of quality performances and deep band friendships. While at BHS, he founded our Community Swing Dance, and Puget Sounds, the only jazz festival dedicated to small groups, which make up the vast majority of playing and recording opportunities in jazz after high school and college. He has also served on multiple schedule and hiring committees at BHS, and has served on the Board of Directors for our regional music teachers' association in multiple roles, including president and webmaster. Off campus, he plays trumpet with Backstreet Jellyroll, TMB Brass Band, and Bud's Brass Quintet. He served as principal trumpet in the Bainbridge Symphony for five years before retiring from that ensemble in 2018. He's married to Dr. Lauren Drakopulos, and together they are renovating a 1901 schoolhouse and trying their best to explore the great NW and beyond whenever they have a rare spare minute. He has a soft spot in his heart for the Seattle Mariners, frisbees in parks, bouldering gyms, and the bands at BHS. <3 <3

Sorry, Paul.  This is the only picture I had of you.

Paul Meehan has been the band director at Woodward Middle School since the 2011-12 school year, and he's become a bit of a legend.  A man of quick wit and high expectations, Paul also has a history teaching elementary school and has made a huge impact on music education teaching and building African Marimba Ensembles.  In the 2000's he took a group of middle school students from Commodore Options School to Africa to build marimbas.  In the 2010's he was honored by Yale University for his contributions in this area of teaching.  As a band director, Paul's ensembles have consistently earned Superior ratings at Large Group Contest, and he constantly gets standing ovations at his spring concerts.  We're luck to have him, and he's working his tail off for our kids.  Consider buying the man a coffee.

Molly Mongomery is a senior at Bainbridge High School and will be attending Central Washington University in the fall to persue a degree in Music Education.  Molly has been a wonderful member of our percussion ensemble these past four years, and has excelled as a musician and a leader.  Under her leadership, the Bainbridge Percussion Ensemble returned to the State Solo & Ensemble Competition for the forth consequitive year, and our BHS Drumline won their caption at all three of our competitions this fall.  Molly was in a percussion quartet that won first place at State this year, and she earned an honorable mention as an outstanding marimba soloist.  Molly won 2nd place at the KTMA Annual Music Competition this year, and is a Schaake Scholars Scholarship award winner at CWU.
